First Nations Engagement Session Highlights Port Hope Waterfront Sites and Northern Transportation Route Remediation

Indigenous_engagementCanadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) staff met with representatives of the Alderville, Curve Lake, Hiawatha and Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations on June 26 to receive updates from each of their communities and share information about current project activities managed by CNL’s Historic Waste Program (HWP). Held annually, this year’s session focussed on Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) water quality monitoring programs and Port Hope Harbour remediation, as well as the Low-Level Waste Program remediation being undertaken along the Northern Transportation Route in Canada’s far north. Discussions were followed by a walking tour of the PHAI cleanup sites along the Port Hope waterfront.

CNL is committed to engaging First Nations and Aboriginal communities to understand their areas of interest and provide timely information updates. As HWP project activities increase, CNL staff will remain in close communication with these communities to exchange information on regular basis.
