The first phase of radiological investigations on approximately 175 road allowances, laneways and rights-of-way in Port Hope is complete, with final reports expected this summer. The investigations included service utility locates, traditional land surveying and gamma radiological scans.
The second phase – borehole drilling/soil sampling – is expected to get underway in 2017. The road allowance investigations are being conducted as part of the Property Radiological Survey to test for the presence of historic low-level radioactive waste. Road allowances that do not meet PHAI Clean-up Criteria will be remediated as part of the cleanup of major sites and residential properties, scheduled to begin in 2018.
