Two information sessions held for contractors interested in the contract for the construction and operation of the Port Hope Project Long-Term Waste Management Facility were well attended, said PHAI Management Office Senior Contracts Officer Micheline Lebrun.

The project delivery team’s presentation at the July 2016 sessions focussed on contract specifications, regulatory compliance, safety and radiological protection. Attendees were also given a tour of the long-term waste management facility site that will provide safe storage for approximately 1.2 million cubic metres of historic low-level radioactive waste to be cleaned up from various sites in Port Hope.

Construction of the first cell of the engineered aboveground mound at the facility is already underway under a separate contract. The new contract, expected to be awarded in March 2017, includes excavation of waste already on the site and its placement in Cell 1, construction of the remaining cells, operation of the facility (receipt and placement of waste from other Port Hope sites) and closure of the facility once the cleanup is finished, scheduled for 2022.
