Communication and public engagement are key elements of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI). A variety of communication products and outreach activities ensure that the local community and broader public have up-to-date information about the Port Hope and Port Granby projects.
The Management Office features a Project Information Exchange (PIE) where members of the public are welcome to drop in, meet with staff and learn about the projects. It is prominently located in the lobby of the PHAI at 115 Toronto Road in Port Hope and offers barrier-free access. The PIE has an extensive collection of project-related fact sheets, brochures and public documents including the environmental assessments and screening reports for the Port Hope Project and the Port Granby Project. 3-D models of each project's long-term waste management facilities and surrounding lands are on display in the PIE to help the public visualize how the engineered aboveground mounds will fit into the local landscapes when the projects are complete.
Information about the projects is shared with larger stakeholder groups through public information sessions and updates to municipal councils, community groups, schools and the business community. The PHAI also distributes over 15,000 newsletters twice a year to residents in Port Hope and the Port Granby area that feature the latest project activities and information. Current information about the projects is readily accessible through the PHAI website, Facebook and Twitter.
The PHAI provides project updates and tours of the project sites to interested residents, groups, schools, organizations and delegations. For further information, please email phai.ca, call 905.885.0291 or visit the PIE at 115 Toronto Road, Port Hope.
The PHAI Phase 2 Public Information Program sets out the protocol for ongoing, timely and accurate public communication about the activities of the PHAI. The Public Information Program describes the variety of communication products and outreach activities, some of which are outlined below, that ensure the local community and broader public have up-to-date information about the Port Hope and Port Granby.
