Site preparation starts at Port Hope Project long-term waste management facility

Excavation to prepare for construction of the Port Hope Project engineered aboveground storage mound starts this fall at the site of the long-term, low-level radioactive waste management facility. The work involves removing and stockpiling contaminated soil on site to develop a clean zone where construction of the first cell of the aboveground mound will begin next year.

With the Port Hope Project waste water treatment plant now built and the start of Cell 1 construction planned for next summer, the cleanup of historic low-level radioactive waste at sites throughout the community is scheduled to begin in 2018.

The final pieces of heavy equipment – three all-wheel drive, off-road articulated haul trucks – arrived at the work site on November 6. Local media attended to photograph this project milestone.
