  • CNL’s research is the first to suggest that low dose radiation can improve the efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy, which improves a new form of cancer therapy that’s already proven to be effective. CNL recently filed a provisional patent on combining these two therapies for the treatment of a specific cancer.

Small Modular Reactor Technology

We have a vision for the development of small modular reactors (SMR).

Much more than simply electricity generation, SMRs can be part of an overall energy scheme that includes district heating, co-generation, energy storage, desalination, and hydrogen production among others. These traits are particularly attractive to remote off-grid applications in northern communities or industrial sites, such as mines, where consistent, reliable and low carbon, clean energy is needed.

Facilities

CNL’s Chalk River Laboratories represent the largest single complex within Canada’s science and technology infrastructure. The site contains several licence-listed nuclear facilities, including the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor and more than 50 other unique facilities and laboratories.

CNL manages legacy liabilities at the following sites in Canada:

  • Chalk River Laboratories in Ontario, with about 70 per cent of the liabilities;
  • Whiteshell Laboratories and the nearby Underground Research Laboratory in Manitoba, with about 20 per cent of the liabilities;
  • Three shutdown prototype reactors, with about 10 per cent of the liabilities:

  • Nuclear Power Demonstration (NPD) reactor in Rolphton, Ontario;
  • Douglas Point reactor in Kincardine, Ontario;
  • Gentilly-1 reactor in Bécancour, Quebec.
