The former St. Mary’s School property was first cleaned up during the 1970s, and smaller, exterior cleanups took place up to 2002. During the upcoming PHAI cleanup, which applies more stringent criteria, the remaining contaminated soil will be removed from beneath the asphalt-covered areas of the property.
Recent investigations identify the volume and location of the contaminated soil. Monitoring has confirmed that current radiation levels at the site meet Federal-Provincial Task Force Criteria, which was developed for the protection of human health. The school was closed in 2009 due to changes in enrolment.
