The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) cleanup of your property is voluntary. The Pathways to Compliance clearly identifies the three options available for owners of properties on which contaminated material has been found: full participation, a partial cleanup using a “Special Circumstance Protocol,” or opting out entirely.
With full participation, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) removes low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) and restores the property at no cost to the homeowner. With the partial cleanup, a homeowner can choose to preserve certain property features. The remaining waste will be noted and may be transported and stored at no cost, only for a compelling reason, through the Construction Monitoring Program. Ask for more information.
