“We like talking with you” – Connecting with the Community

Fall is a busy season for community events in Port Hope, and this year was no exception. Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) participated in two popular local events, the Run Salmon Run Festival and the Port Hope Fall Fair, connecting with residents, answering questions, and sharing updates on Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) activities. Staff, often residents themselves, also took the time to celebrate the unique things that make up the character of this local community.

The Run Salmon Run Festival celebrates the remarkable migration of salmon in the Ganaraska River each fall. The festival attracts residents and visitors alike to downtown Port Hope, offering educational exhibits, family-friendly activities, and opportunities to learn more about the local environment.

Residents had the opportunity to learn about ongoing PHAI work, ask questions directly to General Manager, Scott Cameron, a local. Cameron was on hand to discuss project progress, and the environmental improvements being achieved through the project, particularly at the waterfront. Community members with a strong interest in environmental stewardship are often interested in how PHAI supports these goals.

Staff were also at the annual Port Hope Fall Fair, which is a longstanding community tradition that brings together residents from across the municipality as well as visitors from neighbouring communities. The CNL booth provided information about project activities along with fun activities for visitors of all ages.  An illuminating and useful giveaway was also a hit with fairgoers.

The next big opportunity to connect is the upcoming PHAI in the Fall event. Participants can learn more about upcoming project activities, speak directly with the General Manager and enjoy family-friendly attractions, including the popular Touch a Truck experience sponsored by CNL’s contract partners. Visitors will have the chance to get up close to project equipment, including an excavator.

As the Port Hope Area Initiative progresses, community engagement remains a cornerstone of the project. CNL looks forward to continuing these conversations and participating in future events.
