The Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) was created in response to the community’s request for the cleanup and long-term management of historic low-level radioactive waste in the municipalities of Port Hope and Clarington.
As the project continues to progress, AECL and CNL remain committed to listening to community concerns and working collaboratively with project partners.
On July 20, 2026, senior leaders from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) met with Port Hope Mayor Olena Hankivsky, the Honourable David Piccini, Ontario’s Minister of Labour and Member of Provincial Parliament for Northumberland—Peterborough South, and other project partners to discuss the PHAI.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss important issues that have been raised by residents and the broader community, including opportunities to further strengthen project delivery, reduce impacts on residents, their properties and the natural environment where possible, and continue building public confidence as the project progresses toward completion.
Significant progress has been made to date, including the successful remediation and restoration of large community spaces. As complex remediation work continues on private properties in Port Hope, all parties recognize the importance of ensuring the project continues to evolve in response to changing community needs while maintaining its commitment to safety, environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and responsible stewardship of public funds.
