As part of our ongoing responsibility to deliver the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) efficiently and responsibly, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) continues to review project impacts, costs, schedules, and future work planning related to the private property remediation program.
The review involves consideration of how current and future remediation work is delivered. Additionally, opportunities to minimize potential impacts associated with planned remediation activities on private properties in or near Port Hope’s downtown core, including impacts to local businesses and the broader community are carefully considered.
As a result of the review, CNL will be making changes to how some aspects of the private property remediation program is delivered. This includes changes to the approach to remediation activities.
The private property remediation program continues, and CNL remains committed to fulfilling the agreements made to participating property owners. Property remediation and restoration work currently underway will continue, and work planned for future properties will proceed as updated plans for those properties are finalized.
Some property owners may experience delays to planned activities while changes are implemented. Property owners that are participating in the project will continue to receive updates regarding their individual schedules and project plans. Please be assured that those who choose to participate will have their properties remediated.
In addition, planned remediation work on properties in or near Port Hope’s downtown core will be paused while CNL evaluates options to further reduce or avoid impacts to local businesses and the community.
While delivery approaches may evolve over the life of the project of this scale, CNL’s priorities remain the same: protecting people and the environment, delivering the project responsibly, and completing the cleanup commitments made to the community of Port Hope.
