NOTICE: All PHAI Field Work Temporarily Suspended

Effective August 12, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has suspended work on all Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) construction sites in Port Hope and Port Granby, including the long-term waste management facilities. CNL made the decision to stop work after a dump truck struck an overhead utility cable at a PHAI construction site on August 11, 2021. Fortunately, there were no injuries; however, CNL takes all safety-related events very seriously and an investigation into this incident began immediately.

All sites have been placed in a safe condition for the duration of the work suspension. Only activities required for site safety will continue, including security and water management. CNL is completing a review of site safety procedures and has directed its contractors to do the same.

Our highest priority is keeping workers and the public safe. Work will resume when CNL is satisfied that all PHAI contractors have met stringent criteria for a safe restart.

CNL staff can be contacted at [email protected] and 905.885.0291 to provide information and answer questions. Updates will be posted to phai.ca as soon as available.
