Continuing the Port Hope Project

With the hearing date fast approaching, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is inviting stakeholders to take a look at Port Hope Area Initiative activities over the past ten years, which can be reviewed here.

CNL has created a summary document, which includes key details, from the full Commission Member Document (CMD) that was submitted to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to support an application for a ten-year renewal of the Port Hope Project Waste Nuclear Substance Licence.  This licence will allow for the continuation of cleanup activities in Port Hope.

The summary highlights lessons learned, Indigenous Engagement as well as current and upcoming work planned for the PHAI.  The CMD demonstrates the operating performance and ongoing commitment to safety and environmental protection for the current licensing period. It also outlines plans to continue work on the PHAI under a renewed, combined CNSC licence.  The CMD information provided to the CNSC Commission will be discussed at the upcoming licence hearing.

The current licence expires at the end of this year and CNL remains committed to completing the PHAI projects safety and compliantly.  The CMD in its entirety can be read on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission website here

The CNSC Licence Hearing to renew the Port Hope Project Waste Nuclear Substance Licence is scheduled for Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at the Best Western Plus, 930 Burnham Street, Cobourg. Everyone is welcome to attend in person or virtually via Zoom.  Interventions may be submitted no later than October 14.
