CNL has made significant progress on environmental remediation efforts in the Highland Drive area, with projects moving into their next phases over the coming months.
Cleanup work in the Highland South Ravine is now complete. Restoration activity in this area is expected to resume Spring 2026 with completion in Summer 2026. Now that the original creek has been restored, the remaining tasks for the South Ravine include the installation of safety fencing around the Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB) and final restoration landscaping.
Remediation efforts continue at the Highland Drive Landfill. The amount of historic low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) contamination found is larger than originally expected. As a result, cleanup activities at the landfill are ongoing, with restoration work anticipated to continue into 2027.
In addition, work will be progressing on the property located closer to Cavan Street, north of Highland Drive owned by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). Remediation and restoration of this property is planned for 2026. Contamination is limited to isolated areas of the property.
Neighbours can expect to see construction fencing, heavy equipment, and the removal of some trees and shrubbery on the private property during this work. Residents and visitors are reminded to obey all posted safety signage and exercise caution when walking or driving near active construction zones.
