Living as Environmental Stewards

Taking care of the environment is more than just a job for the staff of both Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and our PHAI contractors. This was beautifully on display on a sunny Friday afternoon in April when staff from CNL, Arcadis and WSP cleaned up the shoreline and adjoining areas in the Port Hope waterfront to mark Earth Day.

Over 70 participants volunteered to collect litter and garbage from the public spaces and roads adjacent to Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) work sites, the Port Hope East Beach and sections of the Waterfront Trail and surrounding area. More than 140 pounds of trash was collected and disposed of by those lending the helping hand.

The activities were supervised by health and safety staff and provided a chance for public interactions and education about possible conservation tasks. Overall, it was a great opportunity to give back to nature and support one of the main pillars of CNL Vision 2030 – to restore and protect the environment.

These cleanup initiatives were included as part of Ocean Wise: Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and the Keep Our County Clean mayor’s challenge in Northumberland County. Special thanks goes to the WSP environmental team, Arcadis and Rob Monico, Environmental Services / Sustainability Coordinator for CNL who helped coordinate this impactful activity. CNL and project contractors continue to work together to help make Port Hope an even nicer place to live, work and play.
