Member of Parliament Cheryl Gallant visits Port Hope and Port Granby

The CNL team in Port Hope and Port Granby was pleased to welcome Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke who made the trip to learn more about CNL’s environmental remediation program. With the licencing process underway for the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) in Chalk River, MP Gallant is seeking a thorough understanding of the project on behalf of her constituents. As part of this, she visited the Port Hope and Port Granby Long-Term Waste Management Facilities to see similar technologies being implemented to improve the environment.MP Gallant toured the Port Granby mound, which was recently capped and closed. This significant milestone for the Port Hope Area Initiative provided an example of work completed under CNL. Next, she saw the Port Hope facility which is actively accepting contaminated waste from the community for long-term storage.  She saw up close what an aboveground engineered mound looks like as its being actively filled, and the detail and precision involved in operating the facility.

And finally, she toured the Port Hope Waste Water Treatment Plant, which will be similar to what would be in place at the NSDF. She saw the extraordinary measures undertaken to collect water from the mound, isolate it from the environment, separate the water from the waste, all the way through to the extrusion of solid wastes for storage and the release of fresh water, free of contaminants.

MP Gallant asked questions throughout the visit and seemingly came away with a much deeper appreciation of the science and rigour behind CNL projects to restore and protect Canada’s environment.
