During a routine inspection at the Lions Park remediation site in Port Hope on March 25, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. CNL security personnel identified that a portion of the perimeter fencing around the site had come down due to high winds. Upon discovery, the fencing was reset.
High winds continued and at 3:00 a.m. on March 26, 2024, it was observed that the fencing had come down again. The fencing was reset again, with additional supports for stability to prevent a recurrence.
The site includes radiological protection zones containing historic low-level radioactive waste that was safely secured in sealed containers at the time the fencing was down. No one, including any members of the public, accessed the site while the fencing was down.
CNL has notified the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
There was no harm to people or the environment during this event.
