On February 19, 2026, material contaminated with historic low-level radioactive waste was removed from a Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) remediation site and improperly disposed of at a municipal landfill.
On discovery, a team was immediately dispatched to retrieve the material, ensure the wastes are properly managed and disposed of in the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility, as well as conduct any and all necessary clean-up and additional verification.
PHAI remediation and waste transportation activities were paused, and an investigation is underway to determine the causes and prevent a reoccurrence.
There was no risk to public safety or the environment as a result of this event.
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks have been notified.
