Heavy rainfall on August 3, 2026, generated surface water that exceeded the capacity of holding ponds and a containment berm within a work area at the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility (LTWMF). As a result, water from the work area entered an adjacent clean area that naturally flows beyond the LTWMF site.
Project staff responded immediately and successfully re-established containment of the work area by approximately 4:00 p.m. on August 3. Water remaining within the affected areas is being collected and pumped to the facility’s water treatment plant before release.
Project staff continue to assess the event by confirming the volume of water that may have left the site and collecting water samples to determine whether any contaminants were present in the off-site flow. CNL will contact the appropriate regulatory agencies once the sampling results are reviewed and the investigation is complete.
There is no impact on the environment or the public as a result of the overflow.
The safety of workers, the public and the protection of the environment remain CNL’s top priorities. CNL will continue to investigate the event and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
