On February 1, 2023, following the review of a shipment of marginally contaminated building materials to the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility, it was identified that the classification on the packing label was incorrect. Based on a review made by CNL personnel, the correct classification should have been Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Class 7 (radioactive material) and not TDG Exempt (Dangerous goods that are generally available to the public).
The review confirmed that the shipment made on January 24, 2023 was received safely at the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility.
CNL will continue to review shipment classifications as part of its regular oversight to ensure compliance with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Transport Canada Regulations.
The event was reported to the CNSC and there was no related impact to workers, the public or the environment.
