Update on PHAI Private Property Remediation

Further to our announcement about a work pause and internal review, please note that Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) will transition away from its current contract with WSP for future private property remediation and restoration work.

WSP is a valued contract partner and will continue to complete remediation and restoration activities currently underway on properties where work has already commenced. WSP also continues to play an important role supporting CNL through work at the Harbour and Centre Pier, operations at the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility, and other projects under the Historic Waste Program in Ontario and the Northwest Territories.

This change affects approximately 47 private properties scheduled for future work during the 2026 construction season. As a result, the start of remediation activities on those properties will be delayed while CNL implements changes. All other scheduled private property cleanups will continue.

Affected property owners have been notified directly and will continue to receive updates regarding revised schedules and next steps as planning progresses.

The review considered a range of factors, including budget and opportunities to minimize potential impacts associated with remediation work in Port Hope’s downtown core and surrounding areas. Consideration was given to impacts to the heritage-defining character of the downtown, environmental and social impacts, as well as potential effects on local businesses and the broader community. New work on private properties in the downtown area will remain paused.

CNL remains committed to fulfilling its remediation and restoration commitments to participating property owners and to safely completing the cleanup commitments made to the community of Port Hope.
