Visitors to Port Hope’s scenic West Beach will notice fencing in certain nearby areas this summer. This is to facilitate additional Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) restoration work and community enhancement in the area.
The restoration work includes finalizing the parking lot barriers and installing new accessible playground equipment. The improvements are designed to return the area to safe recreational public use following the cleanup of historical low-level radioactive waste.
While parts of the area, including the parking lot, will remain behind fencing during the summer months, public access to the shoreline and water remains open. Additionally, alternative parking is available nearby, helping beachgoers to access the area conveniently during the restoration period.
It’s also important to note that the western portion of the West Beach will stay fenced off beyond this summer. Restoration activities in that section are scheduled to be completed in 2026 and will include a naturalized area. Fencing is necessary to ensure public safety and support environmental protection measures until that work can be completed.
CNL and the Municipality of Port Hope appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as this important restoration project moves forward. The PHAI continues to bring long-term benefits to the community and ensure safe, sustainable use of the waterfront for generations to come.
