Women in Nuclear Durham Members Tour PHAI Sites

A group of twenty Women in Nuclear (WiN) from the Durham chapter joined staff for a guided tour of Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) sites earlier this month. Participants were able to gain firsthand insight about one of Canada’s largest environmental remediation projects.

The tour featured stops at Lions Park, Alexander Street Ravine, Port Hope Harbour and the Port Hope Project Long-Term Waste Management Facility. The scope and complexity of private property remediations were also noted. The bulk of the historic low-level radioactive waste in Port Hope is now in current long-term storage with over 2.4 million tonnes safely transported to the engineered mound.

A follow up presentation generated thoughtful discussion during a Q&A session, where attendees grappled with a deeper understanding of the challenges and successes of the PHAI.

CNL is excited to showcase the collaborative efforts necessary to complete the PHAI and is willing to host groups or individuals on tour. We remain committed to transparency, and fostering dialogue about environmental remediation, while also supporting the advancement of women in the nuclear and environmental sectors.
