Port Hope

On July 29, 2025, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) received a letter from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regarding the placement of uncharacterized radioactive wastes from the Port Hope Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility (PH LTWMF).

As a precautionary measure, CNL issued a directive to cease placement of all plant wastes at the PH LTWMF until an evaluation is completed to confirm proper waste characterization.

CNL takes this matter seriously and is committed to ensuring that all wastes received at the facility are properly characterized, documented, and recorded. An investigation is underway to determine the cause and to identify measures to prevent a recurrence. The results of this analysis, along with defined corrective actions, will be submitted to the CNSC.

There is no risk to the safety of workers or the public resulting from this event.
