Port Hope

On October 6, 2022, following the review of a shipment of marginally contaminated Personal Protective Equipment to the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility (PH LTWMF), it was identified that the classification was incorrect. Based on calculations made by the CNL Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) shipper, the correct classification should have been UN 2912 – LSA-I (Low Specific Activity) and not UN 2913 -SCO-1 type (Surface Contaminated Object, in accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission) Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulations.

The review confirmed that the shipment made on October 5, 2022 was received safely at the Port Hope Long-Term Waste Management Facility.

CNL will continue to review shipments as part of its regular oversight to ensure compliance with CNSC and Transport Canada Regulations.

The event was reported to the CNSC and there was no related impact to workers, the public or the environment.
