At approximately 2 p.m. on 2022 November 22, a CNL contractor observed that gas was leaking from the outboard motor of equipment being used for Port Hope Area Initiative activities in the northeast section of the Port Hope Harbour.
The motor was immediately removed from the water while absorbent booms and hydrophobic spill pads were placed in the water to contain and clean up the spill. It was estimated that less than 1 litre of gas had leaked to the water surface.
CNL notified the appropriate regulatory agencies, including the Ontario Spills Action Centre and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, as well as the Municipality of Port Hope.
There was no risk to the safety of workers, the public or the environment from this event.
