On June 4, 2024, a CNL contractor observed a cylinder with unknown contents on the Centre Pier site. The cylinder had been retrieved from the Port Hope Harbour as part of PHAI dredging work and had been placed in the Sediment Processing Area on site, along with other dredged material.
Upon observation of the cylinder, workers performed a safe back out in keeping with established site safety procedures. Work in that area of the site has been paused while specialist personnel investigate the contents of the cylinder. Work will resume in that area once the investigation is complete and it has been verified that it is safe for the workers to return.
CNL provided this information to Cameco, which has operations adjacent to the harbour and Centre Pier, and to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the Municipality of Port Hope.
